San Francisco 49ers Player Aldon Smith Dropped from Team After 3rd DUI

With training camps in session and the season just around the corner, jail is the last place a football player wants to be right now.

For former San Francisco 49ers player Aldon Smith, prison is a reality. The linebacker was recently arrested for his third DUI after being involved in a hit and run.

Now, the team has dropped the player from their roster, probably due to his troubled history of drinking and driving.

A Promising Future Marred by Alcohol Use

25-year-old Smith, a first-round draft pick form the University of Missouri, was first arrested on suspicion of DUI back in January 2012. The charge was changed to reckless driving, but Smith didn’t stay out of the news for long — later that year, he was charged with felony weapons possession.

In September 2013 his legal woes continued after he was involved in a car accident and charged with DUI. At this point, Smith went to rehab, missing five 49ers games that season.

He was also suspended for 9 games of the 2014 season for violating the NFL’s personal conduct and substance abuse policies.

The 49ers have said they wish Smith well and hope he can get his life back on track. We echo their sentiment.
