One Direction Does Drugs?

British boy band One Direction has always had a fairly wholesome image. This changed last week with the release of a video showing two members smoking marijuana.

What’s the deal with the footage, and how has it impacted One Direction’s fans and the band itself? ARCpoint Labs has the scoop below.

One Direction Smoking Weed

The Evidence

The video in question was released on Tuesday, May 27. In the clip, One Direction members Louis Tomlinson, 22, and Zayn Malik, 21, are shown seated in an SUV, traveling during the Latin American leg of their tour. From behind the camera, Tomlinson says “So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days!” After a brief discussion about the drug and whether the moment should be filmed, Tomlinson is passed a lighter and starts smoking the marijuana.

The Apologies

Though Tomlinson and Malik have yet to speak up about the video, bandmate Liam Payne has broached the issue, stating “We are only in our 20’s we all do stupid things at this age. We all have a lot of growing up to do…Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us through this.”

The Fallout

Fans (and parents of young fans) have expressed outrage and disappointment over the incident. Some have ripped and burned their concert tickets. Parents have banned their children from attending shows or buying CDs. Critics have said that the North American leg of the tour could be delayed or even canceled if the US chooses to refuse the band entrance to the country, though this scenario is unlikely.

In any case, One Direction has likely learned that behavior like this won’t be tolerated by its young fans and their guardians — and they’ll probably watch their actions more carefully in the future.
