Liza Minnelli in Rehab, Seeking Help With Substance Abuse

Actress and singer Liza Minnelli has voluntarily checked into rehab for help with her substance abuse problems.

Daughter of Hollywood royalty Judy Garland and director Vincent Minnelli, Liza is a legend in her own right. She’s among an illustrious and small group of performers to have won an Oscar (for her role as Sally Bowles in Cabaret), Tony, Emmy, and a Grammy.

Minnelli has been open about her substance abuse and addiction in the past; in fact, she was one of the first celebrities to speak openly about rehab. She left a 1984 production of musical The Rink in order to pursue treatment at the Betty Ford Clinic. She’s not only struggled with alcoholism, but also prescription drug abuse stemming from Valium she was prescribed after her mother’s untimely death in 1969. Garland also famously struggled with drug abuse, and her death caused by overdosing on barbiturates.

According to Minnelli’s rep, the icon is making “excellent progress.” Since she has sought treatment for substance abuse several times in the past, it’s clear that Minnelli knows her drug and alcohol use is dangerous and needs to stop.

Hopefully, this stint in rehab is enough to help Minnelli break free from addiction once and for all.
