Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay Seeks Addiction Treatment

In the sports world, athletes are periodically busted for drunk driving or drug use. Now it’s not a player who’s in the spotlight for DUI and possession — it’s Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.

Irsay was arrested on Sunday, March 16 after law enforcement suspected him of driving under the influence. Read more about Irsay’s situation, including his entrance into rehab.

Jim Irsay’s Addiction

Arrest & Charges

Irsay’s arrest came after police witnessed him driving driving erratically. Upon being pulled over, Irsay failed multiple field sobriety tests. Arresting officers also found several Schedule IV prescription medications in his car — allegedly, they included Xanax, Darvocet and Ambien. Irsay was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated, but also faces four counts of felony possession.

History of Drug Addiction

This isn’t the first time that Irsay has struggled with drug addiction. In 2002, Irsay admitted he had grown dependent on painkillers taken after orthopedic operations. According to Irsay, he was able to kick the habit after receiving professional treatment. Family, friends, and fans alike hope that the same can be said of Irsay’s newly resurfaced addiction.

Release & Rehab

After his release on Monday, March 17, Irsay voluntarily checked into a treatment facility. A statement released by the Colts confirmed Irsay’s commitment to recovery and thanked fans for their support as he pursued addiction treatment.

Aftermath of Addiction in the NFL

It remains to be seen how Irsay’s arrest will be addressed by the NFL. As a team owner, he is subject to league discipline per the personal conduct policy.

If convicted, Irsay faces 6 months to 3 years in prison for each felony count. He will appear in court on Wednesday, March 26.

Hopefully, Irsay’s time in rehab can help him combat his addiction problems.
