Demi Lovato: Staying Sober in the Entertainment Business

Three years after entering treatment for bulimia, self-harm, and drug and alcohol addiction, Demi Lovato’s recovery is still going strong, meaning she can be added to our list of sober celebrities.

Here’s a look back at Lovato’s struggles and how she excels at staying sober in the risky entertainment industry.

Demi Lovato and Staying Sober

Entrance Into Rehab

After withdrawing from the Jonas Brothers Live in Concert tour on October 30, 2010, Lovato first entered a treatment program for “physical and emotional issues,” including drug and alcohol addiction. Reports surfaced that Lovato was seeking treatment after family, friends, and management staged an intervention due to Lovato’s erratic, confrontational behavior on tour, culminating in a physical scuffle with a female back-up dancer. Lovato concluded her treatment at the Timberline Knolls facility on January 28, 2011.

Why Demi Stays Sober

In a December 2013 interview with Access Hollywood, Demi shared more details about her journey with staying sober. She realized she was addicted to cocaine and alcohol — going so far as sneaking vodka in sprite bottles and cocaine onto airplanes because she couldn’t go without it for more than an hour. Her mother eventually told her that Demi needed to set a better example for her younger sister, Madison — and Lovato took note. She cites Madison and her family and friends as huge motivators for staying sober.

Demi’s Strategies for Staying Sober on Tour

How does Lovato do so well at staying sober in such a temptation-filled industry? She does what she can to keep herself and her team healthy, even going so far as to ban drug and alcohol use on her “Neon Lights” tour. She wants all tour participants — from back-up singers and dancers to her management team to behind-the-scenes workers — to stay clean for the duration of the 3-month tour. And Lovato insists that that’s how it should be for every tour — rather than a party atmosphere, tour members should be focused and professional.

We applaud Demi for her continuing success at staying sober, and hope that others can follow in her footsteps!
