If you’ve tuned in to any pop radio stations lately, you’ve probably heard Miley Cyrus’ new party anthem called “We Can’t Stop.” When listening to the lyrics, you may hear “So la da di da di//we like to party//dancing with Miley.” Or…you might understand something completely different.
Molly or Miley: Up for Interpretation
While her producer initially claimed the lyric said, “Dancing with Miley,” Miley herself recently stated that it’s up to the listener to determine what it is she’s saying. In an interview with the Daily Mail she explains, “If you’re aged 10 [the lyric is] Miley. If you know what I’m talking about, then you know.” Does it really sound like it’s up for discussion? Another lyric in the song appears to reference cocaine, saying “Everyone in line in the bathroom//Trying to get a line in the bathroom.”
What is molly?
Molly is a recreational, psychoactive drug, also known as MDMA and ecstasy. It acts as a stimulant and a psychedelic, increasing blood pressure and heart rate. The drug is typically taken in pill form, and the effects can last between three and six hours. MDMA’s side effects and consequences can be unpredictable and sometimes even result in death.
Miley’s Not the First
You may remember Rick Ross raising eyebrows a few months ago due to his reference to the drug in his song U.O.E.N.O. He raps, “Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it. I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.” While he somewhat apologized for the lyrics, many people weren’t buying it. One tweet read, “I don’t condone rape. Apologies for the #lyric interpreted as rape. #BOSS” Sponsors like Reebok subsequently dropped him. Other rappers referencing molly in their lyrics include 2 Chainz, Mac Miller, Kanye West and Lil Wayne.
Molly has become an especially popular drug reference among artists. While it may be glamorized in pop culture, understand that it carries dangerous side effects and can point you down a negative path.
