Colin Farrell has come a long way. This year he starred in two films, Seven Psychopaths and Total Recall. His acting resume continues to grow as he’s been seen in such films as Daredevil, Miami Vice, S.W.A.T., and even appeared in the comedy Scrubs. People don’t realize that the Irishman has had some struggles in the past, mainly with drugs and alcohol.
“Honestly, I’ve got eight hours a day now that I didn’t have before, when I was drinking every day for 18 years,” the actor said in an interview earlier this year (source).
I’m just grateful that I’m actually alive, to be honest. Anytime I have a (expletive) mood, now it’s some aspect of me that is present and is feeling whatever I’m feeling, and the same counts if I’m giddy or jocular. It’s honest, it’s real. That’s quite simply the coolest thing. Everything is real now.”
Like a lot of stars, Colin can keep himself clean nowadays because of his three-year-old son, Henry. When Henry was born, Colin wanted to put no effort into changing out of his alcohol ways, believing them to be part of his “bad boy image.” He planned to still be a good father, but he learned that he couldn’t be a good father and an alcoholic. He got clean and has stayed that way since.
He admits that sometimes he doesn’t know what he’s doing, trying to be a good father everyday, but it’s a challenge he accepts and knows makes him better.
Lessons from Colin
We’re glad to see Colin made the effort to get clean. It’s hard to imagine being a drunk and losing 18 years of your valuable life. After all, the actor is only 36. We look forward to what Colin has in store for audiences in the future, and hope he stays away from drugs and alcohol.
