Mischa Barton’s Mental Breakdown

You may know her as privileged California girl Marissa Cooper from The O.C., but in reality, actress Mischa Barton’s life was not all sunshine and beaches.

The 27-year old, whose notable roles have slowed since her character was killed off the show in 2006, suffered from a nervous breakdown and drug addiction in the past, and she’s recently opened up about her public struggles.

Succumbing to Scrutiny & the Pressures of Fame

Barton says that the pressures of fame, including relentless media scrutiny, caused her nervous breakdown six years ago. She turned to drugs and alcohol to cope, partying with Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan, two celebrities also known for their own drug addictions. She soon found that drugs and alcohol were not enough, and she faced depression.

Weight Speculations

When she gained weight due to her addiction and alcoholism, the media did a 180 from her days on The O.C., when she was frequently accused of being anorexic; she was shamed for her weight gain by bloggers, reporters, and comment trolls. This scrutiny only further deepened her depression and her drug and alcohol abuse.

Arrest & Hospitalization

Barton’s problems became more public in 2007 when she was arrested for DUI. Rumors about previous visits to rehab and psychiatric facilities soon surfaced. She was dropped from her talent agency in 2008.

Like Britney Spears before her, Barton was deemed a danger to herself and forced into hospitalization in July 2009 by Section 5150 of the California Welfare & Institutions Code. Fans and the media speculated that the star was under suicide watch. Barton now denies these claims, explaining that extreme stress, depression, and exhaustion led to her psychiatric hold.

Focus on the Future

Now Barton is looking ahead to her future after receiving treatment for her depression and addictions. She told People “I’ve learned a lot. I’m stronger now and excited for what’s ahead,” including a slew of movie roles.

It’s refreshing to see a celebrity discussing their past struggles candidly. We wish Mischa all the best in her future, and hope her depression and addiction are truly behind her!

Poor girl, the media can be so harsh. It’s no wonder these celebrities are turning to an outlet. Glad the girl was able to get help.

Wow, that is some interesting stuff. I haven’t heard her name in some time now. It’s crazy when you find out what these former stars are up to after the fame has faded.

These stories are far too common but I like it when we can see someone face and overcome their addictions or depression. Everyone has their battles and rough patches, but it’s not about how you fail or mess up (because that’s life), it’s about how you recover and come out on top that matters most.

It’s a shame that girls like this can’t ever be themselves. One minute she’s too skinny, the next she’s gaining too much. Feel bad for her.
