20/20’s Elizabeth Vargas Again Seeking Treatment for Alcoholism

20/20’s Elizabeth Vargas is once again in rehab for alcohol dependency.

The celebrity newscaster voluntarily checked herself into rehab in November 2013 and has publicly shared her struggle with alcoholism on Good Morning America.

Now she’s checked herself into rehab again and released this statement:

“As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process. I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry. I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time.”

Vargas and her husband, singer-songwriter Marc Cohn, separated months ago. Following Vargas’ return to rehab, Cohn said “we are in total support of her recovery and want her to be well.” The couple has two sons together, Zachary (11) and Samuel (8).

Vargas first received treatment in a rehabilitation facility that specializes in trauma. She has suffered anxiety and panic attacks since her childhood — and these issues lead her to self-medicate with alcohol. In her first rehab stint, Vargas chose to leave after 28 days against her doctor’s orders, eventually returning after 5 days and leaving for good after the doctors have her the green light.

We wish Vargas well on her continued recovery.
